The task of substitute teachers and teacher assistants is challenging in all of its aspects. Committed to the belief that all can learn and all are responsible for the learning process, substitutes must adopt this as their code of conduct. It is imperative that high quality persons be sought out and certified as a substitute teacher in order to uphold the standards that have been well established in this school district.

The minimum education requirement for recommendation by the MSD of Mt. Vernon for a Substitute Teacher's Certificate is a high school diploma, and preference will be given to those persons who have completed at least 30 semester hours of college credit from an accredited institution.  Positive, related experiences working with children are also required.  Examples of these experiences would include, but not be limited to, classroom instructional assistant, day care worker, camp counselor, private school worker, baby sitter, etc.

Substitute instructional personnel may indicate days of the week available and school, grade level, and subject preferences.  Substitute instructional personnel are paid on a daily (or half-day) basis.  Non-degree substitute teachers earn $75 per day.  A rate of $125 per day is paid for substitute teachers with a Bachelor's Degree (or higher) or valid Indiana Teacher's License.  MSD of Mt. Vernon retired teachers or teachers on our Reduction-in-Force (RIF) list are paid $125 per day.  Substitute teacher assistants earn $75 per day with no additional pay for degree or license.
